What potential lies in a foreign world? A foreign world that makes you see your own world in a new light? We are confronted with narratives that originate (in more than one sense) in the photographer. Are these images real or fictional – real and fictional? The images offer a chance to understand and, at the same time, fail to understand. It's what makes them so pleasurable to view. To see the familiar as foreign. To anticipate something but we don't know what. Can such a life be ours? Impatient, anxious, intriguing, possible. In the end one question remains: What's next? This is next: images of something else. Not: communism, tradition, third-rateness, good food, arrogance, massages, collective, corruption, Confucius, poverty, smog, innovation. The exotic. What we see is shaped by imagination and curiosity. Something emerges, slick, dirty, full of pathos. Maybe tomorrow. Maybe never. Maybe.

Ralph Baiker's images reflect on this world from his – and thus our own – point-of view. He sees in China the things he brought with him. And he quickly realises that this world has a will of its own (whether it's aware of it or not). The images reveal this, too: the messenger will always have to surrender to the recipient. And watch in wonder. And so a world is made possible, with its own despair, chaotic love and perhaps a sort of meta-future. Let us look at the signs. (White boy is no longer in Harlem but in an unknown metropolis full of ambivalence and diversity.)

Baiker's most important artistic works were created in São Paulo, Greece, the countries of the Arab Spring and now China. He's interested in elements of his own culture and heritage that were transferred to these places. In China, while teaching communication design at Beijing Normal University in Zhuhai, he was supposed to explain Western values to the students: brands, corporate messages, "out of the box thinking", creativity...

Welches Potential steckt in einer fremden Welt, die vielleicht gar nicht nur fremd ist, sondern die eigene Welt neu realisiert? Wir sehen Fiktionen, die Ihren Grund (in einem doppelten Sinne) im Fotografen haben. Sind die Bilder wirklich oder erfunden – wirklich und erfunden? Der Genuss dieser Bilder besteht in der Möglichkeit, das Gesehene zu verstehen und nicht zu verstehen. Das Eigene als Fremdes zu erkennen. Eine Antizipation, von der wir nicht wissen, was wir wollen. Kann ein solches Leben unseres sein? Ungeduldig, angst-voll, fasziniert, möglich. Am Ende steht die Frage: Wie geht es weiter. Es geht weiter. Mit Bildern, die etwas Anderes zeigen. Nicht: Kommunismus, Tradition, Minderwertigkeit, gutes Essen, Arroganz, Massage, Kollektiv, Korruption, Konfuzius, Armut, Smog, Innovation.Exotik. Imagination und Neugier bestimmen den Blick. Etwas taucht auf, slick, dreckig und pathetisch. Vielleicht morgen. Vielleicht nie. Vielleicht.

Ralph Baikers Bilder reflektieren diese Welt aus seiner – also auch unserer – Perspektive. Er sieht etwas in China, was er selber mitgebracht hat. Und realisiert schnell, dass diese Welt einen eigenen Willen hat (bewusst oder unbewusst). Die Bilder zeigen also auch, dass der Bote dem Empfänger immer wieder unterlegen sein muss. Und staunt. So kann eine Welt mit eigener Verzweiflung, chaotischer Liebe und vielleicht einer Art Meta-Zukunft möglich werden. Schauen wir uns die Zeichen an. (Der „white boy“ ist nicht mehr in Harlem, sondern in einer uns unbekannten Millionenstadt voller Ambivalenz und Perspektive.)

Baikers wichtigste künstlerische Arbeiten sind in São Paulo, Griechenland, den Ländern des Arabischen Frühlings und aktuell China entstanden. Ihn interessiert, was aus seiner Kultur und Herkunft an diese Orte transferiert wurde. In China war er aufgefordert, als Lehrender an der Bejing Normal University in Zhuhai jungen Kommunikationsdesignern westliche Werte zu vermitteln: Marken, Markenbotschaft, "out of the box thinking", creativity …
